Vintage Nike sneakers have been a driving force in the brand’s recent designs, a trend that will continue in 2021. This week, we have an early look at the Swoosh’s latest upgrade to a retro silhouette, bringing the original racing shoe back with the Waffle One.
Nike’s recent years have been dominated by popular collaborations, from the ongoing releases with Virgil Abloh’s Off-White to more subtle releases like the Undercover Daybreak, and Sacai’s wildly popular LDWaffle, both from 2019. All of these projects have borrowed running silhouettes from Nike’s early days, repurposing them into popular lifestyle models thanks to their timeless style and comfort. Now, Nike is adapting these more limited-edition versions into one, now titled the Waffle One. The brand new model is built with a mesh base layer for the upper, adding support and stability through synthetic underlays, while suede overlays for the mudguard, lacing system, and heel counter give the Waffle One the look of a classic Nike running shoe. The heels feature plastic counters similar to the Undercover Daybreak, adding rigidity to the rear while thin collars and tongues complete the look.
NIKE WAFFLE ONE RELEASE INFORMATION
The upcoming Nike Waffle One has not yet been announced for release, though they are expected to launch sometime in the coming Spring months from both Nike and select retailers. Borrowing elements from popular collaborations with the Waffle Racer, the Waffle One will come with a much lower price tag of $100. UPDATE (May 23rd, 2021): Nike’s upcoming release of the new Waffle One silhouette in in-line colorways has finally been scheduled for this week, going down on May 26th, 2021. The Waffle One will debut in the bright “Active Fuschia” color scheme seen here, before adding more new styles and colors in the coming weeks. Nike has committed to the previously leaked retail price of $100.
