Nike’s Hispanic Heritage Month Collection Includes The Air Force 1 And Air Trainer 1 “La Familia”

Nike’s Hispanic Heritage Month Collection Includes The Air Force 1 And Air Trainer 1 “La Familia”

Having recently appointed Mónica Gil to its Board of Directors, Nike is poised to continue supporting and highlighting Latinx creatives, athletes and entrepreneurs. As part of its latest Hispanic Heritage Month collection, the Swoosh has outfitted the Air Force 1 and Air Trainer 1 in “La Familia” themes.

Both anniversary-celebrating silhouettes are clad in rather tonal arrangements that include nods to Latin American cultures and values. Vibrant embroidery and multi-colored accents land on the “La Familia” duo, but Bruce Kilgore’s 40-year-old Nike Air Force 1 design boasts a bolder look across its upper and sole unit. Nevertheless, both celebratory sneakers draw inspiration from public gathering places found throughout Mexico, Brazil and other Latin American countries and territories, while “We Are Familia and “Somos Familia” text is displayed on everything from tongue labels to shoe boxes.

In addition to launching product for the month-long event, the Swoosh has taken “La Familia” as an opportunity to tell the authentic stories of several Latina athletes. Historically, women from Latin American backgrounds have participated less in sports than both their men and U.S. counterparts. Marketing material for Nike’s “La Familia” collection, then, features Paralympic volleyball player Nicky Nieves; six-time national champion and WBC amateur champion Chantel Navarro; and roller skater Kimberly Zuniga.

“The Latino community plays a critical role in shaping the future of Nike’s business and the future of sport,” John Donahoe, President & CEO of NIKE, Inc., said in a press release. “Our commitment to engage and serve the community is not limited to a day or month, it is year-round. It starts from within, through investment in building a diverse and dynamic workforce that fuels design innovation, and extends outward through authentic collaborations and inclusive community programming that cultivate our future generation of leaders.”

Enjoy campaign imagery of the pairs ahead, and find the “La Familia” capsule arriving to Nike.com tomorrow, October 1st. The Air Force 1 Low is priced at $150 USD, whereas the collection’s Air Trainer 1 retails for $120 USD.
