Double Trouble: Nike’s Iconic Air Max 90 “Infrared” Reappears With Stacked Air Bubbles

No, your eyes have not deceived you – Nike has really added stacked Air bubbles on its iconic Air Max 90 “Infrared.”

The Swoosh has yet to share details about the upcoming retro, but it’s a safe bet to believe the eyebrow-raising (and head-scratching) pair has been specifically designed for women. Over the last handful of years, the Nike, Inc. empire has reimagined some of its most popular designs through the lens of women’s fashion. The initiative has resulted in models like the Air Force 1 Shadow and Air Jordan 1 High MM – styles that transform performance heritage into fashion-forward footwear. Furthermore, the Oregon-based conglomerate has also developed entirely-new silhouettes for women, one of which may have laid the blueprint for the two Air Max units on the unreleased “Infrared” pair.

In May 2021, Nike unveiled the Air Max Furyosa, a tank-reminiscent design exclusive to women. Although the sneaker borrowed design cues from the Swoosh archives, it introduced a layered visible Air cushioning system that delivered height and comfort. The futuristic element has also appeared on other Nike Sportswear models in different forms, but the newly-surfaced stacked Air Max 90 “Infrared” resembles the Furyosa. From mudguard to tongue, the pair takes after Tinker Hatfield’s blueprint from 1990 rather faithfully, with the exception of the tongue’s pull tab and reworked TPU panel at the spine. Underfoot, the 33-year-old story gets a huge update. Air bubble cassettes are elongated and taller to accommodate for the dual Air units. The top layer, however, abandons the support pillars traditional to Air Max cushioning, suggesting the setup is another version of Nike’s revolutionary technology. Outsoles have also been modified for style and presumably for function, too. Reminiscent of the Air Huarache’s tooling, the modernized traction pattern keeps things simple in layout, but also enjoys a new two-line logo that also appears on the spine; the detail nods to the stacked Air units in a minimal way.

Enjoy official photos of the modernized classic ahead. The pair is likely to debut as part of Air Max Month 2024 (March) via nike.com.
