More Nike Air Max 90 Colorways Emerge As We Near 30th Anniversary In 2020

Everyone has a different reason for wearing sneakers. Some people may look at footwear as simply protection for their feet; others as a vehicle towards fleeting social media stardom. A third group of sneaker geeks – not to be confused with “Sneakerheadz” – enjoy shoes for their design, construction, and shape. “Shape” tends to take a backseat in popular sneaker-related conversation given that to the naked eye, the colorway takes the wheel. Even most Air Jordan 1 retros haven’t revisited the iconic ’85 model’s original shape, despite sporting the original “Bred” and “Chicago” color schemes time after time. “Shape” is the reason why (some) shoe aficionados hunt down beaten Jordan 1s at their local flea markets, or why Fear of God‘s Jerry Lorenzo almost walked away from his highly-coveted sneaker collaboration with Nike. The same model from different years found in the same color pallette may look the same to untrained eyes, but they aren’t.

As it approaches its 30th anniversary, the Air Max 90 is set to continue its return to OG form in a new obsidian and teal combination. At a glance, there’s nothing “OG” about this upcoming release, but just like the “Volt” retro teased back in October, this understated runner has updated the toe to sit closer to the height it first release with almost 30 years ago. That same toe is constructed in a dark-mesh also found around the heel and tongue. Mudguards and other overlays don a lighter, but equally as drab blue. The only pops of color on this celebratory silhouette exits on branding found on the tongue, insole, and heel, as well as the iconic Air bubble. If you already own a pair of Air Max 90s and want to compare their shape to a closer-to-OG edition, you’ll likely find these on Nike.com and select retailers as we head into 2020. Until then, enjoy an official look at the sneaker below.
