ComUnity Culture Check at Shelflife

Everyone has a lived experience. The minute you put yourself and your ideas out into the world, every person's lived experiences come together as an entirely new organism, creating a community all on its own.

It is difficult to define what community truly means but our friends at ComUnity do a good job at embodying all that it encompasses- authenticity, culture, cultivating and sharing.

For First Thursday this past week, we hosted a group of like-minded individuals who form a part of ComUnity’s insiders, family and friends. The night spotlighted the founders of the event- Loyiso “Loyd” Mdebuka and Vincent “Sir Vincent” Manzini who chatted about ComUnity, their beginnings with iKasi Experience, and how these entities evolved since their inception.

The open panel discussion was hosted by Thato Bernado with the goal of enriching the creative community in better understanding creative partnership, and also featured industry locals like Andile Dlamini from Broke Boys and Noks Zimu aka Fortnoks from Power Play.

With both Andile and Noks starting their careers through their passion for culture and music, respectfully, they were able to shine light on the role of community in their work as well as how they remain true to their intentions whilst running a business.

As boys from Khayelitsha, where creatives rarely had a platform, Loyd and Vincent had a shared vision to provide a space for a different type of community to be cultivated. This was the driving force in creating a platform catered towards culture, and the success of ComUnity is truly testament to their intention that “no matter where you come from, it’s normal do amazing things.”

Check out some of the nights highlights, filled with good food, great music and better connections:
