Kids’ First Look: Akid x Mara & Mine

The children’s market has a new capsule line. FN has the first look.  Akid and Mara & Mine have teamed up on embroidered loafers — one style in two colorways. Priced at $120, the looks were handmade in Spain with calf suede leather and cotton metallic stitching. Starting today, the styles are available at Akidbrand.com.

“We had been looking for a way to expand our signature slippers into the children’s wear market,” said Tamie Ingham, co-founder of Mara & Mine. “There was no better way than to team up with our friends and founders of Akid.”

Here, Akid co-founder Ashleigh Dempster offers more insight on the collaboration.

Why was this collaboration a good fit?
AD: [My husband and co-founder], Matt [George], and I have known Tamie and Jasmine, [the founders of Mara & Mine], for a few years now. I am a huge fan of their sandals and slippers, so it was pretty natural for us to want to shrink them down to mini-me sizes like all of Akid silhouettes.

What was the inspiration behind the designs?
AD: Collectively, we wanted to keep the collaboration simple by producing a kid’s version of Mara and Mine’s classic Jem Skull slipper.

Any tips for styling these shoes this holiday season?
AD: The slipper is meant for every occasion, whether it be a fancy holiday party or something more casual. I personally love this shoe with a worn pair of jeans and an old T-shirt, but that’s just me. Our customers have such unique style. It’s inspiring to see how they incorporate our shoes in their kids wardrobe.
