Saks To Transform NYC Flagship Into ‘The Winter Palace’ For Holidays

Saks Fifth Avenue is giving new meaning to “deck the halls.” Later this month, the department store will unveil the holiday decorations for its New York flagship, built around the theme of “The Winter Palace.”

As part of its annual tradition, Saks will offer imaginative designs for its holiday windows, this year showing the Earth’s great wonders transformed into wintery fantasies. Imagine: the Empress of China sliding along the Great Wintery Wall or a mermaid transfixed by a frozen Great Barrier (or “Brrrier”) Reef.

The company also plans to mesmerize shoppers with a new theatrical light show projected against the facade of the building.

The light show, the first of its kind for the retailer, will feature 3-D elements and more than 225,000 individual points of controlled light. Pulling it off will require at least 10,000 hours of work by around 250 people.

“I am constantly amazed by the creativity and talent of the Saks Fifth Avenue team,” Marc Metrick, president of Saks Fifth Avenue, said in a statement. “Utilizing new technology and with a fresh take on the winter wonderland concept, Saks Fifth Avenue has created something legendary with The Winter Palace.”

Watch on FN

Saks’ big reveal will take place on Monday, Nov. 23, at 7 p.m., when 200 choir members from The Oratorio Society of New York and the Cathedral Choristers of the Cathedral of St. John the Divine will flood Fifth Avenue with the sounds of holiday carols.

Even if you miss the unveiling, shoppers will be able to enjoy the windows and the light show throughout the season. Saks’ Winter Palace theme will also be rolled out to stores nationwide.
