Sports Authority Announces It Will Be Open On Thanksgiving Day

Today Sports Authority announced its Thanksgiving and Black Friday deals, along with plans to stay open on both days. This comes after REI made a groundbreaking announcement that it would be closed on Black Friday. CEO Jerry Stritzke said in a letter that the outdoor retailer would be closing its stores and encouraging its employees to “opt outside.”

He wrote: “Here’s why we’re doing it. For 76 years, our co-op has been dedicated to one thing and one thing only: a life outdoors. We believe that being outside makes our lives better. And Black Friday is the perfect time to remind ourselves of this essential truth.”

Sports Authority stores will be open 6 p.m.-12 a.m. on Thanksgiving Day. The retailer wil be giving away $15 Sports Authority Cash Cards to the first 80 customers in line. Stores will then reopen at 8 a.m. on Black Friday and remain open until 10 p.m.

The Colorado-based company is encouraging customers to shop both in store and online. Following the REI announcement, DSW released a statement saying that “family time is extremely important to us, and we want our associates to enjoy the holiday with their loved ones.”

DSW plans to close stores on Thanksgiving Day and open stores at 7 a.m. on Black Friday.

Although Sports Authority stocks plenty of outdoor sporting gear, it looks like they’re not interested in following in REI’s footsteps, and instead will be cashing in on one of the busiest shopping days of the year.
