Fendi‘s spring ’16 runway shoes offered a mod sensibility this season. Creative Director Karl Lagerfeld made use of oversized floral appliqué treatments, using colorful embellishments on both flat and heeled mules.
While the Italian label’s ready-to-wear collection read as more 1980s than 1960s — puffed shoulder sleeves, anyone? — the footwear went in a decidedly groovy direction. Flower shapes were crafted out of metal, with contrasting studs placed in the middle of each one and also applied to the front of the vamp.

The treatment was done on a variety of styles. Heeled mules had cutout detailing, rope wrap-tying and a slight platform. Red stitching proved to be a thoughtful tie-in to the colors in the embellishments. A single-sole heel and a flat slide sandal got floral appliqués, too.
The brand’s signature flashy sneaker offering also tipped toward the mod trend. Slip-on sneakers were done in black leather with thick, contrasting soles.

While consumers will surely be drawn to the eye-catching designs, Fendi’s commercial collection will also include the same silhouettes without the appliqués. (After all, the style does read as more of a day shoe than a night option.)
