The fashion verdict is in — and ready for debate: Fur is back, but should it stay? The furry message was widespread throughout the international Fashion Weeks, with designers using both faux and real pelts as details on their shoes.
Beginning in New York, Tibi finished Moroccan mules with the shaggy treatment. Anna Sui took more of an apres-ski approach to the trend, with fur-lined boots designed to be chalet-ready.
In London, the faux-fur approach surfaced, presenting a more ethically conscious approach to the divisive look. Sophia Webster collaborated with The Shrimps on both mules and booties lined with colorful faux fur. Over at Bionda Castana, the brand’s line of ankle-strap sandals with A.W.A.K.E. also featured a panel of faux fur.
The trend grew stronger and less unapologetic as the season progressed. Gucci’s show in Milan, the first under designer Alessandro Michele, featured furry horsebit loafers, a style that was first seen at Gucci’s men’s show in January.

In Paris, John Galliano’s second show for Maison Margiela included fur ankle boots dyed an unexpected shade of green.
While fur has always been present in fashion, the look is pervasive for fall ’15, and with so many collections incorporating it this season, the material risks becoming the antithesis of luxury.
Looking back, Celine’s spring ’13 show first helped put furry footwear on the map with its fur-lined slide sandals. Since then, the trend has expanded to virtually all styles.
