To celebrate Giorgio Armani‘s 81st birthday this Saturday, we’ve taken a look back at some of his memorable celebrity shoe highlights. Armani, along with his friend, Sergio Galeotti, founded Giorgio Armani S.p.A. 40 years ago this month.
During the 1980’s the Italian designer rose to prominence within the US, in large part for his men’s suiting. These days, as has been the case for some time now, Armani designs are a red carpet mainstay. The likes of Naomi Watts, Iggy Azaelea, Diane Kruger, Jennifer Lopez and Anne Hathaway have all worn his gowns for A-list events.
In addition to custom gowns, Armani has created statement custom looks for Lady Gaga’s during her 2010 The Monster Ball Tour, in addition to red carpet appearances. During her 2010 tour, Gaga wore custom Armani sky-high silver metallic geometric platforms. She threw one of the shoes into the crowd, which consequently went to auction at Drouot Richelieu in 2013.

Again in 2010, at the Grammy Awards, Gaga was decked out in an outer space-esque Armani ensemble from head to toe, including crystal-embellished platforms. Not quite as outlandish as Gaga’s styles, yet just as worth highlighting, are shoes worn by celebrities Hayden Panettiere and Bella Thorne.
