Manolo Blahnik marked a special occasion Thursday when he greeted eager fans at Saks Fifth Avenue for the first time.
The designer recently opened a boutique at the retail store and made his first public appearance there on the first day of New York Fashion Week. He signed shoes as well as his new book, “Fleeting Gestures and Obsessions.”

Wearing a lilac suit, the icon talked to Footwear News about a few of his plans while in New York City. (The designer was also honored this week at FIT’s Couture Council Awards.)
“I’m going to Barnes & Noble to get blu-ray [movies], and I go to libraries to get books. Unfortunately, I’m an old-fashioned boy,” said Blahnik, who added that the next novel on his list is Harper Lee’s new book, “Go Set a Watchman.”
His latest actor obsession, he said, is Matthew McConaughey. “I think he’s brilliant,” said Blahnik, who also spent time with another famous face this week. Alec Baldwin was on hand to support Blahnik at the FIT Awards.

“I met him yesterday, and I’m very fond of his radio show,” Blahnik added.
Blahnik is collaborating with a number of brands for New York Fashion Week: Carolina Herrera, J. Mendel, Milly, Adam Lippes, Wes Gordon, Protagonist and Barbara Tfank.
