First Look: Manolo Blahnik Spring 2016 Shoe Collection

Manolo Blahnik is beloved for bucking trends and conventions, always preferring to go his own way. Spring ’16 was no exception, with the designer only showing his collection to press late last week.

But what’s that they say about good things coming to those who wait? It certainly applies here. Blahnik toyed with fragility and strength this season, which translated into a series of pumps and sandals with a swirling teardrop motif done in finely appliquéd leather that almost appeared to be printed. The happy hues of these styles suggested that Blahnik was aiming for tears of joy or laughter rather than sorrow.

The bejeweled Hangisi pump, made famous as Carrie Bradshaw’s blue satin wedding shoe, was recast in cool indigo denim for a witty juxtaposition of casual and luxe. Signature single-soles came toughened with belt strapping and buckles, and plate embellishments on sandals were inspired by Alexander the Great.

Elsewhere, Blahnik stacked the collection with his staple polka dots, tick-striping and toe caps for spring charm. One particular riff featured rainbow raffia tassels on an otherwise staid slingback flat.

In other news, the classic Carolyne slingback is due to celebrate its 30th birthday soon. No worries there, as the design is utterly ageless.
