Christian Dior Fall 2015 Couture: Shoe Highlights

A modernist, pointillist church inspired the set and collection direction at today’s Christian Dior couture presentation, right down to the footwear. Indeed, the unorthodox mix of raw scaffolding and multicolored panels that decorated the Musée Rodin and glistened like bijoux had a similar jolie laide (“beautiful ugly”) appeal as the shoes. Another way to think of it is that satisfying balance of sweet and sour at which designer Raf Simons excels.

Shimmering paillettes in candy hues, plus T-bar and collar strapping, provided the sweet, while clog-like wedge soles delivered the sour. Tea-length and mini hemlines highlighted this unique shoe statement, created by house footwear designer Francesco Russo.

These unusual shoes were expertly measured to deliver an almost dainty, caged-bird impression when viewed from the front, but transformed into quirky enchantment as models twirled and turned to reveal those clunky-cool soles.
