Celine Finds Its New ‘Cool-Girl’: Joan Didion

Celine just found the ultimate “cool girl” for its latest campaign — and she’s no model.

Acclaimed author Joan Didion plays the starring role in the French fashion house’s spring ’15 campaign.

Talk about a surprising — and brilliant — move for the brand.

Creative director Phoebe Philo has carefully curated the house’s cool, understated aesthetic and signed on Daria Werbowy, Natalie Westling and, most recently, Marisa Tomeii to front Celine’s past campaigns. They’re women who embrace casual, simple elegance, creative cool and an intelligent look. Didion wraps it all up.

The 80-year-old writer, perhaps best-known for her essays (“Slouching Towards Bethlehem,” “The White Album) and fiction (“Play As It Lays”) takes center stage in a black shirt and sunglasses — not overdone, and embracing the  comfortable-in-my-own-skin look that Celine women know so well.

In “The White Album,” Didion sets out her travel packing list, which has been frequently shared across social media and includes the items: “2 skirts, 2 jerseys or leotards, 1 pullover sweater, 2 pair shoes…” Perhaps not such an unusual choice for a fashion campaign, after all.
