Eddie Redmayne, star of critical hit “The Theory of Everything,” won the Oscar for Best Actor tonight at the 87th annual Academy Awards, held at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles. Redmayne, who played a spot-on version of physicist Stephen Hawking in the movie, looked equally sophisticated and stylish on stage.
Redmayne wore a sleek pair of black smoking slippers with a navy Alexander McQueen tuxedo and black bowtie, as he thanked the Academy, cast and crew.
But the actor, who nabbed his first Oscar, gave a heartfelt mention to the person who inspired the movie, and to those, like Hawking, who are suffering from Lou Gehrig’s disease or ALS. “This Oscar belongs to all of those people around the world battling ALS,” he said with the gold statuette clutched tight in his hand.
The roles of the five Best Actor nominees spanned a wide a range of characters. They included an eccentric millionaire in “Foxcatcher,” a military marksman in “American Sniper,” an aging and tormented actor in “Birdman,” the portrayal of Hawking in “The Theory of Everything” and a quiet mathematical genius in “The Imitation Game.”

Redmayne was up against stiff competition. The field of nominees also included Bradley Cooper – who was up for an Oscar for the third year in a row – Michael Keaton, Steve Carell and Benedict Cumberbatch.
Redmayne and Keaton had been early awards season frontrunners. Redmayne had already earned the top prizes for his work at this year’s Golden Globes, Screen Actors Guild and British Academy of Film and Television Arts ceremonies. He often looked equally sleek as he graced the stage to accept those awards, as he did here in a pair of Gucci shoes.
Meanwhile, Keaton, wearing Christian Louboutin smoking slippers to the Golden Globes, accepted the award that night for Best Actor in a Film, Musical or Comedy for playing the washed up actor striving to hit it big on Broadway. At tonight’s Academy Awards, he wore black patent lace ups from American designer Ralph Lauren.
