‘Back To The Future II’ Day: Looking Back At The Nike Air Mag

Wednesday October 21, 2015 is a very big day.

Why you ask? It’s “Back to the Future II” day. Oct. 21, 2015 is the day that Marty McFly and Doc Brown just happen to travel to the future in the sequel to the original “Back to the Future” film.

A few highlights from the 1989 movie show it wasn’t too far off technologically: everyone wears virtual reality glasses (Google Glass or Oculus Rift anyone?), 3D images are the norm and phone calls are pretty much limited to video chats (Face Time and Skype solved that problem.)

But another notable part of the film–and maybe our favorite part–was one of the most coveted sneakers ever made its on-screen debut: the Nike Air Mag.

The kicks, if you remember correctly, aren’t just cool-looking, they’re also self lacing, something we don’t exactly have quite yet on all our sneakers.

While Nike promised the Air Mag sneaker earlier this year (with the self-laces,) back in 2011 the company auctioned 1,500 limited edition pairs to help raise money for the Michael J. Fox Foundation. The project also included a very special spot starring Bill Hader, Kevin Durant and Christopher Lloyd shoe shopping.

Now all we have to do is bide our time and see when Nike will make good on that Air Mag promise.
