Converse Launches Contest for Musicians

Musical artists have embraced Converse as part of their uniform for decades. And the brand is returning the love with a new contest that gives them access to some of the world’s best recording studios.

Starting today, artists and musicians 18 years and older, in any and all genres and from anywhere across the globe, can register for a chance to lay down some tracks at one of 12 top studios — on Converse’s dime.

The brand is accepting submissions now through Wednesday, June 24, via an online process that requires an brief description and a ranking of the artist’s (or band’s) three studio preferences.

Participating companies include the historic Abbey Road Studios in London; Sunset Sound in Los Angeles; Hansa Tonstudio in Berlin; Tuff Gong in Kingston, Jamaica; Greenhouse Studios in Reykjavik, Iceland; The Warehouse Studio in Vancouver, British Columbia; Avast Recording Co. in Seattle; Stankonia in Atlanta; Studios 301 in Sydney; Toca do Bandido in Rio de Janeiro; and the Converse Rubber Tracks studios in Brooklyn, N.Y., and Boston.

Musicians will be notified if they’ve been selected in early July. In September, they’ll be taken to one of the studios of their choice following a thorough planning session with producers. Most travel and other expenses will be covered by Converse.

The brand has been in a giving mood toward musicians since 2011, when it opened its first brick-and-mortar Rubber Tracks studio in Brooklyn. Converse’s second studio will debut this summer in the brand’s new Boston headquarters on Lovejoy Wharf.

Jim Calhoun, president and CEO of Converse, told FN recently, “The Rubber Tracks program has been a sharp point for the brand in terms of our ability to say thank you to the music community that has done so much for Converse. It’s free and open to aspiring musicians who need a break.”

Since the Brooklyn studio opened, more than 900 artists have recorded there, retaining all rights to their music.
