Nike Running Shoes Fall Apart During Berlin Marathon

Running a marathon is tough. Running a marathon with shoes that are falling apart with each stride is even tougher.

Kenyan runner Eliud Kipchoge was the top man in the 42nd Berlin Marathon on Sunday, with a time of 2:04:00. The 30-year-old runner finished first in the race — with the sock liner of his Nike running shoes coming out. According to the Berlin Marathon website, the sock liners started coming out of Kipchoge’s shoes at the 16-kilometer mark (roughly 10 miles), but Kipchoge was aware of the problem with his shoes by the first kilometer (roughly .6 miles).

“It wasn’t a good day for me in these shoes, though they’re actually very good. I tested them in Kenya but just had bad luck on the day. I had problems from the first kilometer,” Kipchoge said following the race, according to the Berlin Marathon’s website.

Despite his shoes falling apart, Kipchoge was still able to beat his personal-best time by five seconds.

According to the website, Kipchoge was on the verge of threatening the course record of 2:02:57, set last year by Kenyan runner Dennis Kimetto.

Kenyan runner Gladys Cherono was the top finisher for the women, with a time of 2:19:25.

On Sept. 18, as the marathon approached, running brand Brooks released a Berlin-inspired edition of its Ghost 8 shoe, adorned with graffiti and bold colors, which was designed to mimic the scenery runners encounter on the course.
