Gladiator sandals reigned supreme on the runway of Valentino‘s fall ’15 Haute Couture show.
On Thursday in Rome, the city where Valentino Garavani founded his couture house in 1960, models took to the catwalk to show the 60-piece collection. Unlike last year’s Couture collection, shown in NYC to celebrate the opening of the label’s flagship store on Fifth Avenue, the models were bare of loafers, ankle boots and ankle-strap sandals.
Instead, we were presented with a variety of gladiator sandals in varying heights, in hues of black and gold— reminiscent of a Roman centurion. That’s no surprise when you consider the strong ties the brand has to the city.
The entire collection evoked the passion that Co-Creative Directors Pierpaolo Piccioli and Maria Grazia Chiuri clearly have for their native city. From the one-shoulder dresses to the floor-length capes and headwear reminiscent of an ancient diadem, the collection was decidedly Roman in every sense.
