Under Armour’s Andy Murray Wins ‘Sports Personality of the Year’ Award

Tennis star Andy Murray took home the BBC Sports Personality of the Year award on Sunday night in Belfast, Ireland. This was the second time Murray has been honored with the title of Sports Personality of the Year.

The Under Armour-sponsored athlete was there to accept the award, saying, “This has been a five-year journey. … We were right down at the bottom level of tennis, and now we’re ranked No. 1 in the world, and I never thought that would be possible.”

Murray was referring to Great Britian’s triumphant first Davis Cup win in 79 years, which occurred just last month. Murry, wearing Under Armour tennis sneakers, completed his 6-3, 7-5, 6-3 victory over Belgium’s David Goffin with a backhand lob over Goffin’s head.

Murray’s Davis Cup victory joins his other big wins, including the 2012 Olympic gold medal and his US Open and Wimbledon titles.

While he wore Under Armour shoes during the entire Davis Cup tournament, Murray made a surprising switch in September, when he was seen playing in Adidas. During the US Open, No. 3-seeded Murray took to the court in Under Armour above the ankles but opted for a pair of Adidas Barricade tennis shoes made by his former sponsor.

Murray did not advance far in the Open, losing in round 16. Shortly after, Murray was seen back in Under Armour kicks at the Shanghai Rolex Masters in October, and he’s been wearing the shoes since.
