Vans Announces Collaboration with Artist Murakami

Vans fans have another very cool collaboration to add to their wish list. The brand announced plans to collaborate with artist Takashi Murakami.

Murakami is best known for his contemporary art inspired by anime and an aesthetic Murakami coined called “Superflat.” His artwork is playful and colorful and blends ancient Japanese traditions with the contemporary art movements.

The collaboration includes footwear, apparel and skate decks through the Vault by Vans line. The Vault by Vans x Takashi Murakami collection will be released at select boutique retailers in late June.

“For the past 10-plus years, without exaggeration, I have been wearing Vans Slip-Ons almost every single day,” Murakami said. “For me, there are no other shoes that are so comfortably wearable that let me focus on producing my artwork. I also feel extremely strong empathy for Vans’ brand concept and creative stance.”

It’s not the first collaboration for the artist. Besides creating the cover art for Kanye West’s “Graduation” album in 2007, he also worked with Marc Jacobs at Louis Vuitton on a special collaboration starting back in 2002. He also teamed up with Pharrell on a public art sculpture at Art Basel and helped to create a music video with the famed-producer.
