Gucci Resort ’16 Collection: Shoe Highlights

If Alessandro Michele’s fall ’15 debut collection for Gucci was his splashy entrance, the label’s resort show was more of an Irish exit—the footwear went mostly unnoticed, with the occasional flourish here and there before, suddenly, it was over.

The latest collection from Michele played it decidedly safe, following Gucci’s fall collection of love-them-or-hate-them shaggy fur mules (both heeled and flat styles were shown on the runway). This season, he focused on block heels. Pumps featured kiltie leather fronts, secured in by metal buckles, while mule sandals were done in crisscross silhouettes, in shades of emerald, canary and pale pink.

The most experimental style came in the form of a gladiator-style pump, which featured bow and pearl embellishments along the front of the wrap-tying. Styled underneath were a nude below-the-knee stocking, which went mostly unnoticed. Prada played with a similar look at its spring ’15 show, pairing colored stockings with clogs, though Michele’s take appeared to be more of an afterthought.

A continued style from Gucci’s fall ’15 show was the lace-up pump with pom poms on the ends of laces. The label’s men’s offering, which was smaller compared to the women’s, saw the classic horsebit loafer make a return. Michele stripped off the fur lining he added onto the fall ’15 shoes, and return to the shoe’s classic shape.

Overall, the footwear collection was indeed pleasing to the eye—and will likely be commercially successful—but is pretty always innovative?
