Never able to find appropriate bridal flats? No longer an issue. Alexander Wang‘s final collection for Balenciaga, shown during Paris Fashion Week, featured mule flats in white lace with various floral embellishments — a style that mimicked the all-white read-to-wear collection, inspired by easy California dressing.
Though only one footwear style was shown and repeated on the spring ’16 runway, it served as a complementary piece to Wang’s deconstructed bridal looks, which consisted of see-through lace slips and asymmetrical ruffling on mid-calf silk dresses.
Considering Cristobal Balenciaga’s history of designing for a customer base predominantly made up of couture collectors and royalty, the special occasion theme here felt appropriate — yet it was given a dash of Wang’s signature cool-girl style, like frilled tanks mixed with silk cargo pants.
Of course, it would have been more stimulating to see more of an assortment in the collection. Will 37 looks and one runway shoe translate to the sales floor? Who knows, but then again, any commercial thinking buzzing around Wang’s mind was likely ignored: he’s here to leave his final mark, not to create practicality.

Considering this is the end of his three-year run, it’s indeed a shame this is Wang’s last collection for the house. It was one of his strongest yet for Balenciaga. But the designer will now have more time to focus on his own mainline, and fashion insiders can only hope he will bring the same dazzle he brought for his curtain call today.
