Maison Margiela’s Architectural Shoes: Paris Fashion Week Spring 2016

Marking John Galliano’s second ready-to-wear collection for the label, Maison Margiela presented its spring ’16 collection in Paris. It featured an architectural footwear lineup that fell in line with its bold, forward-thinking design aesthetic.

Pointy pumps had curved kitten heels and buckled ankle straps, which were made of braided leather with a white, crackled-paint finish. The backs of the shoes were sculpted into a curved shape as well, like some sort of growth was busting out from inside.

The juxtaposition here between chic kitten heels and abnormal shapes was fresh. And considering its fall ’15 plexi heels shaped like butcher knives, at least Margiela’s twisted viewpoint is consistent.

Certain styles were paired with sheer stockings, with fishnet tights worn overtop the shoes and leg. Though Margiela presents a separate couture collection, the styling here was more about creating an overall aesthetic than rational wearability.

Other styles in the collection included T-strap pumps in the same theatrical silhouettes, as well as white flats with Margiela’s signature split-toe detail.
