Stella Jean’s Clever Sock Play: An Ode To The Year-Round Sandal

When in doubt, put a sock on it.

That was the message at Stella Jean’s fall ’15 presentation, held on the first day of Milan Fashion Week.

The Italian-Haitian designer took styles typically reserved for spring — printed slip-ons with embroidery and platform sandals — and translated them into fall with fun, luxe sock styling. Black-and-grey cashmere socks featured colored side tassels in contrasting reds, pinks and blues.

The fall market has been brimming with designers embracing the sock message.

The first hint was back at the pre-fall presentations, where Miu Miu juxtaposed heart-printed socks with snakeskin-printed oxford heels.

Simone Rocha paired nude socks with white Mary Janes for a prim effect.

Los Angeles-based brand Newbark just launched cashmere socks for fall to go with their signature slide sandals.

Though whimsical hosiery styling isn’t new, the idea of making season-specific footwear a year-round staple is suggesting that fashion’s most basic rules are begging to be broken. Strappy sandals in the winter? Why not?

One must wonder whether the look is more editorial than real life, though street-style stars have been heavily sporting it recently. (See our street-style gallery here.)
