Tommy Hilfiger brought a little piece of the Caribbean to New York this week. The designer’s spring ’16 show at New York Fashion Week featured a mini lagoon, with models walking down a wooden dock that served as the runway.
The collection was inspired by the ultra-luxe private island of Mustique, where Hilfiger has a vacation home. The footwear kept in mind this carefree, beachy spirit, featuring multiple riffs on island staples like the espadrille and sandal.
Espadrilles were given a new treatment, with multicolor roped soles added to crisscross sandals and slip-on sneakers. Certain sneakers even had Hawaiian-print motifs printed on the leather.

Sandal styles were done in a variety of crocheted fabrics in traditional Rastafarian colors (greens, reds, yellows, blues). The colors were also done in subtler contexts as well, as piping or elastic bands on sneakers.
While the line’s vivacious, vibrant aesthetic was a breath of fresh air in a strangely muted season so far, it is worth noting that Valentino’s spring ’16 men’s show featured both sandals and espadrilles that were very, very similar.
