After a season of few footwear triumphs in Paris, along came Miu Miu, direct from Milan. And with it, a furthering of the argument that when it comes to the most wholly original, eye-candy accessories, these days Italy is where it’s at. From Alessandro Michele’s tour de force at Gucci to Dolce & Gabbana’s irresistible gimmicks and Prada’s intelligentsia irreverence, France’s rival fashion state is doing it better. And having more fun in the process.
At Miu Miu, this meant that suddenly two of the season’s sure-to-be most influential (yet tricky to replicate) styles presented themselves. In suitable discord for a house built on layering of madcap references and era, one was a ‘70s kinky boot, the other a deranged ballerina flat.

Said kinky boot had the requisite platform and chunky heel, with aggressive football lacing up the shaft. Zigzag patterns in oddball color combos were paired with python – animal prints are Miuccia Prada’s idea of a neutral after all.
On to the ballet flats, which in pink satin were far from sugar sweet with bitter noir lacing on the upper and sockettes. Think punky prima off-duty. Or black swan.
Metallic t-bars and pastel patent pumps with wide ankle sashes were non-events comparatively. Because characterful chic will always rule the roost at this casa.
