Nike Unveils Plans For Portland-Area Headquarters Expansion

If there was ever any question that Nike Inc. is ready to keep its dominance in the athletic market and the shoe capital that exists in the Portland, Ore., area, just look to its newly revealed expansion plans.

The athletic giant unveiled the images of its 3.2 million-sq.-ft. expansion of its Beaverton, Ore., campus today. The new project adds more office, mixed-use and parking space, according to the announcement.

In 1990, Nike unveiled its world headquarters and since then has steadily built onto the campus in several phases. Nike tapped ZGF Architects, SRG Partnership and Skylab Architecture to lead the design and Place in Portland to develop landscaping plans. The new phase of development aims not just to connect current areas of the campus with green space and parks for future growth but to highlight a forward-looking architectural style that takes inspiration from human motion. The company is also designing the spaces for LEED Platinum Certification.

“Every day at Nike, we dream up new ways to inspire athletes to expand their potential,” said Mark Parker, president and CEO. “To do that, we relentlessly evolve how we inspire our own teams and design environments that foster chemistry and collaboration. Our expanding World Headquarters reflects the best of Nike’s culture — a place where we obsess the athlete and invent future products and experiences for consumers everywhere.”

The company is aiming to have the project wrapped by 2018.

Meanwhile, this week Adidas announced plans to expand its North American headquarters in Portland with 120 new jobs, and Under Armour revealed plans to build an office in Portland as well.
