Coldplay, fronted by lead singer Chris Martin, is on its international A Head Full of Dreams Tour, bringing lots of color and confetti to the world’s top arenas and stadiums.
The British quartet consistently wears the same collection of clothing onstage that was specifically customized for the album — a technique the band has used since working on “Viva la Vida,” according to stylist Beth Fenton.
“Each time I work with Coldplay, we collaborate to create a collection of clothes that relate to the themes of the album and tour. It is like creating a universe, and the clothing is an important part of telling that story — like a uniform for each album,” said Fenton. “The band will come up with keywords and indicators of the direction, and we work together on how the clothes can be developed so that message is communicated through the clothes.”
Martin’s onstage shoe style includes multiple colorways of the Jordan Spikize sneakers, which were designed by son Moses on the Nike iD custom site.
“When Chris realized they were going to be the shoe for the tour, Nike was kind enough to duplicate a few more pairs of each. They were exactly in the spirit of the look of the album and it is all about collaboration, teamwork and striking the balance to what works.”
The sneakers, detailed with pink, teal and red colors, combine the iconic elements of the Jordan III, IV, V, VI and XX.
His go-to shoes have also made their way to the Super Bowl 50 halftime show, onstage during the “Today” show and on James Corden’s “Carpool Karaoke” segment.
For Fenton, fashion is a key part of the show as it needs to contribute to the overall visual experience.
“Each album it changes as to how and what we do, so it has an individuality and visual language unique to the band and that album,” she said. “We work on the clothes in advance of the album being released, and it is then used for press and promo and is carried through for the tour. A lot of pieces are bespoke, and almost all of the clothes which I source are customized by me in some way — whether that’s overdyed or with custom-made prints and trims.”
Brands regularly picked by the stylist include Rag & Bone and Levi’s.
