If invited to a White House state dinner, most attendees would bring out the dressiest shoes they have. Not Frank Ocean.
The singer arrived at a state dinner for Italy on Tuesday evening wearing a pair of Vans Slip-On checkerboard-print sneakers. He attended with his mom, Katonya Breaux.

“It’s my first time doing it, probably because it’s my first time here,” Ocean said about sporting his Vans, according to USA Today. The newspaper also reports that Ocean said he’d never expected to attend a White House state dinner. “I think that explains the Vans, also,” Ocean said.
But Ocean wasn’t alone in wearing unconventional footwear to the White House for the event, which honored Italy Prime Minister Matteo Renzi and his wife, Agnese Landini. Chef Mario Batali, who cooked up Italian specialities for the guests, wore his signature orange Crocs.
