When it comes to star-studded affairs, film industry events such as the Oscars are often top of mind. But another one of the most interesting and buzzed-about cultural events to roll out the red carpet annually and draw celebrities in throngs is the Met Gala.
This year’s benefit is right around the corner — taking place Monday at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York. One of the most exciting aspects of this gala is the annual theme, which always correlates with the museum’s upcoming Costume Institute exhibit.
Stars have been known to embrace these themes in their gala wardrobe choices, with elaborate, occasionally wild results. Think Sarah Jessica Parker’s Mohawk headdress and thigh-high plaid Christian Louboutin boots – now that was a prime example of full commitment. And we don’t know about you, but we loved the look.

So what can you expect this year? The showcased spring exhibit, running May 5 through Aug. 14, is titled “Manus x Machina: Fashion in an Age of Technology.” The exhibit will include 150 ensembles dating from the early 20th century to the present, and will discuss how designers choose between the use of handmade and machine-made methods in ready-to-wear and haute couture.
Stars will likely embrace this technology theme, perhaps opting for futuristic looking heels. Keep an eye out for what Taylor Swift, the event’s celebrity co-chair, will be wearing.
In the meantime, though, we take a look back at some of the best footwear to come down the red carpet over the past few years. These looks might be hard to top, but our hopes are high as Monday’s event draws near.
