Michelle Obama & Sophie Gregoire Trudeau Wear Canadian Designers Ahead Of State Dinner

Tonight marks the first time in nearly two decades that a Canadian Prime Minister will be welcomed to Washington, D.C. for a state dinner in their honor.

Canada’s newly-elected Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau are certainly helping to raise the profile of Canada abroad. Or at the very least, with their good looks and youth (he is 44, she is 40) make Americans take notice of their biggest trading partner. Yes, it’s Canada. Before China and Mexico even. Not to be overlooked, the country is also it’s largest supplier of oil. Alright, enough already, you get it. The relationship between the two countries is indeed important.

So what does this have to do with shoes? A lot, actually.

Taking a page from First Lady Michelle Obama’s fashion playbook, the PM’s wife Sophie Gregoire Trudeau may not have the same title, but she has expressed a keen interest in shining a spotlight on her nation’s designers.

Today, in fact, she wore a lovely pair of two-tone pumps by Canadian online brand Zvelle, which is produced in Brazil. The style is called Amelia, after Amelia Earhart and is currently for sale on the brand’s site for $215. Ten dollars Canadian from the sale of each shoe goes to Toronto’s Women’s College Hospital Foundation (WCHF). She paired the heels with a dress by local designer Lucian Matis.

Obama also chose a Canadian designer, wearing custom Tanya Taylor. She paired the deep green printed dress with her go-to Jimmy Choo patent pumps.

It’s been reported that Gregoire-Trudeau works with adviser Jessica Mulroney, née Brownstein (of the Browns Shoes retailer) on her wardrobe choices. With Mulroney’s shoe expertise, certainly it will only be a matter of time before Gregoire Trudeau steps out in some more great Canadian footwear designers.
