When Sarah Jessica Parker descended on the red carpet at the Metropolitan Museum of Art Costume Institute Gala in 2015, the world couldn’t look away.
The actress and designer wore a silk one-shouldered embroidered gown designed in collaboration with H&M, along with an Asian-inspired headdress designed by Philip Treacy — all an ode to the Costume Institute’s theme, “China: Through the Looking Glass.” She finished her look with custom booties from her own SJP Collection. It was a look that had to be seen to be believed.

But this was hardly Parker’s first time turning heads at the Met Gala in New York. Each year, she finds a way to make a statement and tie in the year’s theme to her look.
In 2014, she wore a sweeping black and white Oscar de la Renta gown with yellow satin SJP Collection pumps — an homage to that year’s theme that honored storied couturier Charles James. For the 2013 gala, she epitomized the theme of “Punk: Chaos to Couture.” Parker wore a Giles Deacon watercolor print dress with thigh-high velvet plaid Christian Louboutin boots. Some may have thought it was clashing, but Parker made it look effortless.

Another highlight was in 2006, when Parker attended with her friend, designer Alexander McQueen. She wore a McQueen tartan gown with strappy black sandals for the “AngloMania” theme.
