The Best Shoes From The Gucci Resort 2017 Collection

Fans of Alessandro Michele’s “new Gucci” look won’t be disappointed for the resort ’17 season. The creative director continued his quirky style mandate with a bold new men’s and women’s Gucci collection, which was presented at the Westminster Abbey in London. And boy, were the shoes a trip.

Michele’s resort collection was surprisingly large — a whopping 96 looks — proving the growing importance of in-between seasons is here to stay. The footwear styles ranged from the classic to the flamboyant, likely a strategic move to capture the label’s customers who aren’t quite ready to take on its full-on flower-power look — yet.

Women’s highlights included a continuation of the striped Gucci platforms shown for fall, reinterpreted here as flatform sneakers. A metallic style with rainbow sole was especially showstopping (we already see it on the street-style circuit).

Zip-front pointy boots had seven leather straps with ornate Dionysus buckles. Each strap was printed with spliced portions of Gucci’s iconic snake motif, making for an abstract continuation of the ready-to-wear prints.

Meanwhile, flat sandals were given heavy pearl embellishments with studded silver midsoles. Simple pointy slingbacks had crystal-embellished cherries. Strappy sandals, in red and green metallic, were matched with ruffled tube socks. It was one of the few heeled styles in the collection.

The men’s offering was decidedly more reserved overall. Leather lace-up combat boots were simple in smooth black leathers, but had subtle flourishes such as a single strap with silver Dionysus buckle. Gucci’s classic horsebit loafer was reworked with a slightly more squared toe.

Considering the label’s fall ’15 men’s show kicked off the fur-lined horsebit trend — a shoe that was catapulted into “it” status for the following year — the men’s shoes here were a bit of a lunchbag letdown. There were no obvious men’s standouts. But perhaps Michele is tiring himself of all the kookiness. Can Gucci’s classic Italian roots be making a comeback?
