Walking into Jimmy Choo‘s nature-inspired presentation on Saturday at Milan Fashion Week, you felt like you were entering a secret garden.
For spring 2017, creative director Sandra Choi drew inspiration from both hummingbirds and iris flowers. She also considered “Falling Gardens,” the botanical installation by artists Gerda Steiner and Jorg Lenzlinger.
“For the cruise collection, I played with bold colors. For spring, I really wanted to push that forward and find a symbol to anchor the collection. I looked to a place I’m very comfortable in: nature,” explained Choi. “The 21st century has become so fast-paced that we often forget to be still enough to look around and marvel at the wonders we co-exist with.”

How did hummingbirds figure into the equation? Choi was drawn to the birds’ colorful plumage and their quick movement: “They’re so small and so powerful — and rare. I also wanted to understand their habitat.”
That’s when the iris flower came to mind. “When I close my eyes and think of flowers, they’re always round,” she said. “Very rarely do you think of the iris.”
With these two distinct inspirations in mind, she went to work.
