For its spring ’17 joint-gender collection, which was shown during the Haute Couture season in Paris, design collective Vetements took a decidedly collaborative approach with footwear, outerwear and workwear.
The zeitgeist-y label, fronted by Demna Gvasalia, who also works as Balenciaga’s creative director, commissioned 18 unexpected stalwart brands to work with this season. On the shoe front, luxury riding, roper and cowboy-boot maker Lucchese crafted signature Western snip-toe boots, which were worn by men and women on the runway.

The Lucchese versions were either cropped above the ankle or cut wader-style, high above the knee. Some were spliced along the inseam to fold-over, suggesting riding spats come undone. It was a decidedly avant-garde effort for the heritage Texan brand, which has been in business since 1883. Other footwear brands in the mix included Reebok, Dr. Martens, Church’s and Manolo Blahnik.

Adriana Rizzo, Lucchese’s senior director of product, worked directly with the French label. “Vetements is a revolutionary brand, so we were honored they recognized Lucchese as the quintessential maker of handmade cowboy boots and invited us to join the collaboration,” said Rizzo. “It’s a thrill to be represented on the Paris couture runway alongside this amazing collection of iconic brands.”
