Maison Margiela Couture Spring 2016 Collection Runway Shoes

Talk about go-go boots. Amongst mad mixtures of fabric, lamé and ruffling, John Galliano’s latest Artisanal collection for Maison Margiela featured an eclectic mixture of spazzolato riding boots that were matched to each look.

Inspired by the idea of reassembling and repurposing, the collection saw wardrobe staples spliced together in various offbeat combinations. But these weren’t your average materials: silver ash woods were folded into stiff bodices, raw panels of Korean paper were incorporated into new, unique separates.

Calf-length boots were matched to each artful look here. They incorporated a psychedelic take on marquetry, the art of applying a veneer to form decorative patterns or designs. Other leather boot styled had panels of glitter, snakeskin, and smoked plastic, with punchy prints done in a graffiti or pop art-style finish.

According to a the release from the label, the overall color palette was inspired by Istanbul’s Topkapi palace. Were the riding boots an ode to the palace’s Privy Stables? Either a smart detail or lucky coincidence.
