These aren’t your dad’s loafers. For spring ’17, high-end men’s designers amped up the classic loafer with extreme details such as crystal embellishment and punchy prints.
The rising trend is undoubtedly a response to the Gucci effect. Alessandro Michele, the Italian label’s creative director, has embraced Gucci’s iconic horsebit loafer and transitioned it into the market’s hottest must-have. For spring ’17, he offered styles such as a pink suede mule with crystal snake embellishment. Or squared-toe loafers with mismatched patches (Donald Duck and a lobster, in case you were wondering).

Classic men’s brands followed suit with experimentation in their own way. For spring, Santoni played with woven leathers and monk straps on its loafers. Coach offered penny loafers with metal studding — a look that matched its spring punk theme.
Paul Andrew, which recently launched its men’s line for fall ’16, incorporated a digitized floral print. Over at Jimmy Choo, creative director Sandra Choi took inspiration from rock ‘n’ roll artists via a bandana print. Christian Louboutin designed a loafer in a mixed-media treatment with leopard detailing.
