That’s certainly one way to cure footwear fatigue. A recurring theme for creative directors Maria Grazia Chiuri and Pierpaolo Piccioli, dreamy gladiator looks made up the assortment at Valentino‘s couture show this season — only there weren’t any gladiator sandals on the runway. In fact, there weren’t any shoes at all.
Forgoing the label’s usual strappy sandals — Valentino has shown some version of a gladiator for the past few seasons now — the couture shoes weren’t exactly shoes, but dainty jewelry adornments for the feet. Sculpted gold metal was wrapped around the ankles of bare feet and secured in between the toes, almost like a thong sandal. They were shown with tapestry-print gowns and sheer full skirts.
The foot jewelry, especially when matched with the snake coil headpieces, essentially served to create more of a mood here. And isn’t that the point of couture? Certainly the designers can’t expect the barefoot trend to catch on for spring — though if it did, the Valentino way is how we hope it would catch on.
