Taylor Swift‘s May Vogue cover itself did not come as a surprise. It’s a Met Gala-themed issue, and she is co-chairing tonight’s “Manus x Machina” festivities in New York. But what did indeed ring unexpected was the singer’s decidedly more glam-rock look, capped off with some serious spring ’16 Vetements boots.
Turns out she liked the style so much, she asked to keep the $1,655 pair from the shoot, revealed the magazine’s fashion director, Tonne Goodman, who styled Swift for the photo session.
“The clothes are edgier than what you would normally put her in,” said Goodman in a Vogue podcast in conversation with Andre Leon Talley, who dubbed it the Olive Oyl boot. “She’s a fabulous fashion plate and model size. We conjured something new for her. What is turning this fashion [statement] a lot right now is that boot. We used it throughout.”

Swift was clearly smitten with the round block heels, which call to mind earlier styles created by Vivienne Westwood.
“She wanted to go home with the Vestments boots, and I was very happy to have her go home with them,” Goodman said, noting she had no problem navigating in the six-inch platform, nor in the other style she wore for the shoot, an even taller version by Marc Jacobs. “She danced onto [the] set. She’s a professional.”

While Swift is known to like a platform, her spindly heeled preferences tend to be a little less than current. Vetements, the defiant new darling of the Paris fashion scene, is about as progressive as her fashion leanings have ever gone. She’s since been spotted wearing the style (which is on its way to selling out on Net-a-Porter.com and Mytheresa.com but still available in sunny yellow on Ssense.com) around Los Angeles and to friend Gigi Hadid’s birthday last week.

It’s t-minus a few hours until we see what shoes Taylor sports at the Met Gala. Odds are, they’ll have an eye-popping platform as well.
In the meantime, here are a few other similar styles to get the look.
