FFANY is celebrating with costume designer and stylist Jenn Rogien. On the opening day of the trade show, held Wednesday, the organization unveiled “The Reveal,” an installation of seven top shoe trends for fall ’17.

The trends, selected by Rogien as the curator, include: color reset, embellishment, fantasy, mixed media, sole focus, tech spec and texture. Some brands and featured trendsetters on display include Adidas, Badgley Mischka, Karl Lagerfeld Paris, Keds, Klub Nico, Seychelles, Summit and Vince Camuto.

How would you describe “The Reveal”?

JR: “It’s the first installment of ‘The Reveal.’ It’s really a credit to FFANY’s mission to innovate and connect with their audience of vendors, merchants, buyers and influencers. It’s designed to be a destination where all of the show attendees can get a quick overview of what’s going to be important for fall and winter buys. There are exciting things happening that will affect comfort shoes. There is also a color story, and I’m excited about fall footwear colors stories. I personally love red shoes. There are some mixed-media shoes that are really fabulous.”

How does forecasting trends relate to your work as a stylist?

JR: “I have a personal love affair with footwear. I love a sparkly shoe and a fancy shoe. In my work, shoes are the fundamental building blocks of my work. It affects the way my actors stand and walk and feel. There is a moment in the fitting room where it all comes together. Footwear is really integral to everything I do. I’m a big shoe fanatic.”

What are some brands that you love using on set?

JR: “It’s hard for me to find a shoe I don’t like. When I’m dressing for so many different characters, every shoe will have a home. It could be a weird shoe or a cool shoe or an abstract shoe. That means I have a really long list that I love. Brands change depending on the story. I really try to choose a designer mix that matches to tell the best story.”

What about brands that you personally love?

JR: “You know I love me some Sorel; I did an amazing collab with them. I love Frye boots. I love my glamorous designers — the Giuseppe Zanottis of the world, Jimmy Choo and No. 21.

Any trends that you’re not a fan of?

JR: “I used to have a hard time with sneakers, but I’m so excited to say I’m wearing sneakers today. I tend to be a dressy person in my life. I had a hard time with athleisure. I look like I’m going to the gym; I don’t look cute and chic.”

What TV shows are you watching?

JR: “I binge-watched ‘The Crown.’ I’m a sucker for a period drama for obvious reasons. That set was stunning. I’m waiting for ‘Game of Thrones’ to come back around. ‘Silicone Valley’ is also a palate cleanser [for my husband and I].”

HBO Girls TV Preview
“Girls” costume designer Jenn Rogien told FN that “The focus of ‘Girls’… is so much on real women and real shapes and real sizes.” The girls looked very much “real” in Ugg boots, flats and wedges during the Hamptons episode last season.

What shoes are you excited to wear for the holidays?

JR: “I tend to end up in booties during the holidays because I never want to be that girl teetering in stilettos in an ice storm in New York City. That’s not my jam. Don’t get me wrong: I love a fabulous heel, and the taller, the better. I have pairs that got some sort of details, texture or sparkles or an embellishment.”
