Misty Copeland Unveils Her Own Barbie Doll

Ballerina Misty Copeland knows how to kick off the week on a strong note. Not only does the American Ballet Theatre principal dancer (along with Under Armour CEO Kevin Plank) grace the cover of this week’s Footwear News, out today, she’ll also be attending the Met Gala in New York this evening.

As if that wasn’t enough, Copeland appeared on ABC’s “Good Morning America” this morning to announce a new Barbie doll in her likeness.

The doll wears a costume similar to the one that Copeland wore in her breakout lead role in “Firebird” in 2012.

“This role Firebird I did four years ago, and it was such a significant role in my career and really the first principal role that got me to this point,” she said. “I was hands-on with making sure she really looked like a dancer and looked like me. She has muscles and calves and thighs and a bust, and that was important to me.”

In addition to inspiring young girls with her talents and now with her Barbie doll, Copeland also appears in Under Armour’s “I Will What I Want” and “Rule Yourself” ad campaigns.

“Under Armour has put all of us female ambassadors on the same platform and playing field as their male athletes,” Copeland told FN. “They’re showing us in such a powerful and unique way; women are not often seen in that sort of light. That really separates Under Armour from other brands.”

In addition to announcing the doll, Copeland also told “GMA” that she will be wearing a gown by designer Jason Wu at the Met Gala.

The Misty Copeland Barbie doll is available starting today on Barbie.com. Watch a video on the Copeland doll below.
