Adidas Outdoor Sees Big Demand For Trail-Running Shoes

Trail-running sneakers are poised to be a big sales driver for Adidas Outdoor next spring. The brand, a subset of the Adidas family, reported this week that spring ’17 preorders for trail-running footwear are up 62 percent from the previous year.

“The outdoor trail-running category is one of our strongest areas,” said Greg Thomsen, U.S. managing director for Adidas Outdoor. “Today’s marketplace has evolved tremendously with different demands and a new generation of ultra-runners. Our designers are relentlessly focused on creating new products that enable today’s outdoor athletes to go farther faster and to live without limits.”

Some of the popular styles in its current lineup are the Terrex Agravic GTX, now on sale at Backcountry.com for $113; and the Terrex Skychaser, available at Moosejaw.com for $130.

And at the Outdoor Retailer trade show in Salt Lake City earlier this summer, Adidas Outdoor showcased its latest offerings for spring.

Among the highlights was the Terrex Agravic Speed, the brand’s lightest trail running shoe ever for men and women. The 8.8-oz. sneaker comes packed with performance features, including a breathable socklike construction for a snug fit. It also boasts a perforated EVA collar and tongue with a mesh coveran EVA midsole for longterm cushioning and a Continental Rubber outsole for grip. The style is set to retail for $120.

To promote its trail-running collection, Adidas Outdoor has been investing in targeted marketing opportunities to reach the right audience.

For instance, this weekend (Sept. 3-4) the brand will for the first time serve as the presenting sponsor of the Grand Traverse Mountain Run & Bike in Colorado. As part of the two-day race, participants will run 40.7 miles on trails from Crested Butte to Aspen, and then mountain bike 41 miles back to Crested Butte.

And in August, Adidas Outdoor was the title sponsor of the Aspen Backcountry Marathon & Half Marathon, which drew runners from across the globe.

“We have partnered with the city of Aspen for a few years now, and are working together to help introduce consumers and outdoor enthusiasts to this uniquely beautiful mountain town during the summer months,” said Thomsen.
