Adidas x Parley For The Ocean Prototype Sneakers Debut With Instagram Contest

There’s a lot of plastic polluting the Earth’s oceans, and Adidas is tackling the problem with a new concept sneaker.

Last summer, the brand unveiled a new prototype of the Ultra Boost sneaker made entirely with plastics recycled from the oceans. The soles are created from plastics, while the uppers are made from gill netting. Adidas teamed with Parley for the Oceans, an organization that launches projects to help protect oceans and marine life, to help create the shoes.

Now, the project is coming to life with 50 pairs of the sneaker being produced exclusively for winners of a special Instagram contest. Starting Wednesday, June 8, which also just happens to be World Oceans Day, fans who want the sneaker can create an Instagram video explaining how they’re going to reduce single-use plastic waste from their lives. Complete rules are on Adidas’s social media accounts; the contest runs until July 31.

Adidas is expanding on its commitment to up-cycling and greening its supply chain, too, by announcing that in the second half of 2016, it will incorporate Parley Ocean Plastics into one of its shoe lines.
