Ultra Boost Uncaged & AlphaBounce Improves Adidas’ Running Market Position

Adidas bolstered its North American running market presence in 2015 with the introduction of the Ultra Boost. And according to stats the athletic giant released Wednesday, running continues to be a winning category in 2016.

In an email to Footwear News, Adidas shared info regarding its two biggest running releases of this year — the Ultra Boost Uncaged and the AlphaBounce.

According to the brand, the Ultra Boost Uncaged is Adidas’ fastest-selling performance shoe in America ever, with more than 11,000 pairs sold within the first hour of its release. And when the label released Ultra Boost Uncaged with color — silhouettes featuring red and black Boost midsoles, as well as an all-white monochromatic silhouette — it sold out in a day.

Aside from removing the cage from the shoe, the Ultra Boost Uncaged features a tiered lacing system allowing runners to personalize its style and fit, as well as an internal support system. The shoe retails for $180.

With its AlphaBounce — which debuted in June and retails for $100 — Adidas said the shoe’s first shipment sold out in 48 hours, with men’s iterations selling out online in less than 12 hours. The AlphaBounce features less stitching and minimal material than other running releases, and uses Bounce midsole technology for a responsive and elastic running experience.

“The momentum we have in running is undeniable. Adidas has the best innovations in the industry with Boost, Primeknit and now Bounce,” said Paul Bowyer, senior director of running for Adidas North America. “And today, with high style performance products and impactful execution, we’re connecting with consumers like never before. We’re seeing runners switch brands, athletes choose Adidas over our competitors and sneakerheads demand a performance shoe. Adidas Running will continue to accelerate and we’re eager to share what’s next.”

Adidas CFO Robert Stalker said the company’s revenues in North America increased 22 percent in Q1, driven by even 31 percent gains at brand Adidas specifically.
