There’s some beef between Fila and retailer Alumni — and it has yielded a rather savory collaboration.
The sportswear brand and Brooklyn, N.Y.-based sneaker shop teamed up on a shoe style that resembles a Jamaican beef patty, dropping July 9 exclusively at Alumni’s locations in Crown Heights and Flatbush, and online.
The choice in food pays a nod to the New York City borough’s large West Indian population.
“With this collaboration, our mission was to capture the spirit of the neighborhoods we call home by sharing a treat we eat too often,” Alumni owner Jaeki Cho said in a statement. “After all, you are what you eat.”
The footwear, designed in the Overpass runner silhouette, features a yellow pigskin suede upper with an imprinted trim designed like a beef patty crust. The insole’s brown leather represents the snack’s meat filling. The bottom of the sneaker features a translucent outsole covered with illustrations of the patties.
An advertisement campaign for the new kicks showcases the popular treat in familiar spots for Big Apple residents — behind deli counters and around streetside food carts.
