Falcons Wide Receiver Mohamed Sanu Will Wear Custom Cleats On Sept. 11

With the opening week of the NFL season continuing on Sept. 11, there are sure to be a number of heartwarming tributes for 9/11’s 15th anniversary — and one player will be paying his respects in his own way.

Atlanta Falcons wide receiver and four-year NFL veteran Mohamed Sanu commissioned sneaker artist Dez Customz for a special pair of Nike Vapor Carbon Elite TD cleats.

The bespoke spikes feature mismatched lateral and medial panels, with one side displaying an American flag, bald eagle, the Twin Towers and U.S. military camouflage. The other features the Falcons’ team colors and logo along with Sanu’s uniform number (12).

The Falcons are set to host the Tampa Bay Buccaneers at the Georgia Dome on Sunday at 1 p.m. ET, and the game will air on Fox. Last season, the Falcons finished second in the NFC South with a record of 8-8, missing the playoffs. The same goes for the Buccaneers, who at 6-10 placed fourth in that division.

Sanu’s customs are a one-of-one, but the standard Nike Vapor Carbon Elite TD cleats can be found from retailers such as Dick’s Sporting Goods.

But there’s no word yet if Sanu will be allowed to wear them during the game, as the shoes appear to violate the NFL’s uniform policy. It states: “League-approved tri-colored shoes are permitted with black, white, and one team color.”

The NFL denied Pittsburgh Steelers running back DeAngelo Williams‘ request last season to wear pink cleats year-round — not just in October, which is Breast Cancer Awareness Month — as a tribute to four of his aunts as well as his mother, Sharon Hill, who all died from breast cancer.
