Nike Unveils Cleat For Carli Lloyd, FIFA Women’s Player of the Year

The U.S. Women’s National Soccer Team had an incredible run in 2015, winning the Women’s World Cup for the first time since 1999. One of the championship-winning team’s leaders, Carli Lloyd, was named the FIFA Women’s World Player of the Year.

To celebrate Lloyd’s success in 2015, Nike — her sponsor of eight years — unveiled a special-edition cleat for the midfielder. The brand reimagined its Mercurial Superfly boot for the “Leave Your Legacy” edition for Lloyd, which were presented to her last week in Los Angeles, where the USWNT is training for the 2016 Summer Olympics in Brazil, according to the brand.

“Carli is already one of the greats of the women’s game, and these boots are our way of celebrating that,” said Andrea Perez., GM of Nike Soccer North America, in a statement.

The Beaverton, Ore.-based athletic brand will release 20 pairs of the cleats, autographed by Lloyd, with details on how to get them via the Nike Soccer app and its social media accounts, specifically @NikeSoccer on Twitter and Instagram, and the Nike Soccer Facebook account.

Lloyd will wear the special-edition cleats on Jan. 23 in San Diego during the next USWNT game.

The midfielder was integral in the USWNT winning it all this past July, scoring a hat trick in the team’s final match, a 5-2 win over Japan.
