Keen’s ‘Live Monumental’ Film Now Online

Outdoor staple Keen traveled the country last year in a yellow RV in the name of public-land preservation. The video of its expedition can now be seen online.

The 18-minute “Live Monumental” film — now on YouTube — documents Keen’s 7,500-mile cross-country trip in a 1976 GMC RV, which started in Portland, Ore., and ended in Washington, D.C. The purpose of the trip, according to Keen, was to advocate for the preservation of 3 million acres of public land as national monuments.

The film debuted in San Francisco at the Wild & Scenic Film Festival on Earth Day and was shown on a subsequent 10-stop national summer film tour.

“The film, and the movement, are about inspiring all of us to live in favor of the future — to speak up for our special places that can’t speak up for themselves,” said Kirsten Blackburn, marketing manager for Keen Effect. “We hope to rally individuals and communities to stand up for the preservation of our country’s greatest idea — our protected public lands.”

Keen’s five target areas for the tour included the Owyhee Canyonlands in Oregon, Birthplace of Rivers in West Virginia, Gold Butte in Nevada, Boulder White-Clouds in Idaho and the Mojave Trails in California. Since Keen launched the tour, the Boulder White-Clouds and Mojave Trails have been protected as a Wilderness and a National Monument, the brand said in a statement.

On the 10-stop national tour after the film’s Earth Day debut, Keen continued to raise awareness for the campaign and the final three targeted areas. The brand said “Live Monumental” will be shown on 90 college campuses as part of the Outdoor Foundation’s Campus Challenge, which aims to educate students about the environment, recreation and the outdoors.
